Wood-boring wasps.
The ovipositor is used to insert the egg through coarse bark.
The larvae tunnel deeply into wood.
These insects usually are found in dead or decaying conifers.
Just another step in turning old trees into useful soil.

Species: Urocerus gigas
Family: Siricidae -- horntails, phytophagous
